The Los Angeles City Council voted to slash the pay of nearly 800 employees by 5 percent in order to partially address a nagging $100 million budget deficit. While the move only saves the city $2 million, officials billed the cuts as significant. Those affected include city council members’ aides, certain analysts, heads of city agencies and departments, as well as some administrative and human resources employees.
The approximately six-month plan will begin early next month, and is one of several other pay cuts that have hit city employees in recent months.
Standing in stark contrast to city workers who are being asked to make sacrifices in pay are Department of Water and Power employees, some of which are getting bonuses and raises in coming months.
