Q: How did your family get into the service station business? A: My dad grew up and was born in St. Louis. He came to L.A. when he was 14. His father died when he was young, so he was really a self-made man. Anyway, he went into the service station business in 1939 when he bought the property at Florence and San Pedro. For very compelling reasons, he started self service. He sold gas for less, and really invented the concept of serve yourself. In fact, his first newspaper ad said, “We don’t wash your windows but we give you gas for less.” My dad built up the business very prudently. It’s a wonderful business and a great legacy.
