Commentary: Are You Still Shopping at K-Mart?

Commentary: Are You Still Shopping at K-Mart? The bankruptcy filing by K-Mart and the closing of countless Toys R’ Us outlets are just the most recent indications that the retail industry may be undergoing some major changes. So, the San Fernando Valley Business Journal asks: As a consumer, have the kinds of stores you shop in changed over the last few years? Melissa Wayne President 3 Oh! 5 Creative Inc. North Hollywood Several factors have changed my shopping patterns in recent years. As a business owner, I am concerned with total costs, including the availability and immediacy of follow-up service. The Internet is now our first source of purchasing information and research. We order most consumable items electronically, saving internal labor dollars and allowing more effective personal use. For major purchases, we shop for the best deals, but are also willing to pay for expertise and personal service that may not be available from strictly discount providers. Maryam Shajiee Commercial Loan Officer Wells Fargo Commercial Lending Woodland Hills I don’t shop around but find that giant retail stores are sometimes less convenient, except for Costco. We spend the majority of our purchases at Costco. These purchases from our experience have benefited us greatly. For example, the cost of goods and services offered are easily accessible. The customer service is quick and the products are of great quality. Chris Santo Marketing Manager Lending Apps Woodland Hills The prices that you can get now in most superstores are literally half of, in most places, smaller retail stores. The quality, environment and products are excellent. There will be ample supplies available in most cases. Lately, I think Toys R’ Us has changed the themes and environment. It is more pleasant, and a wide array of interactive displays for kids is presented. In this current economy, these retailers must adjust to be able to beat the competition.
