George A. Smith, 70

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 7 for entrepreneur and philanthropist George A. Smith, who passed away after a long battle with cancer. Smith was 70 years old. Smith founded George Smith Partners Inc., a commercial mortgage brokerage in 1992, following a long real estate career. But he is perhaps best known for his philanthropic efforts. The annual George Smith Partners’ Real Estate Luncheon, which raised money for the A-T Medical Research Foundation, a group Smith founded with his wife Pam to support research for Ataxia Telangiectasia, drew about 1,700 professionals each year. The attendees reflected a who’s who of local industry. Smith’s daughter was affected by the disease, a rare, degenerative disorder. Smith is survived by his wife and his four children and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday at Skirball Cultural Center at 2701 North Sepulveda Boulevard, followed by a private burial. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to A-T Medical Research Foundation, c/o Haskell & Davis, 16000 Ventura Blvd., Suite 806, Encino 91436.
