Studios Start Offering Movie Downloads

Warner Bros. is one of six studios partnering with Movielink to allow movie fans to download feature films beginning Monday. The expansion of service is the next step in the evolution of broadband video-on-demand that allows consumers to create a permanent digital library of films, Movielink CEO Jim Ramo said. “Movielink has carved out a position in the broadband market as the place to come for high quality long form entertainment, and we intend to continue to expand consumer options as the Internet delivery of movies becomes a significant channel of distribution,” Ramo said. Movielink will make “Brokeback Mountain” available via download April 4, the same day the Academy Award-winning film is released on DVD. Other titles available through the service include “King Kong,” “Walk the Line,” Good Night and Good Luck,” and “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group President Kevin Tsujihara said that the company is focused on providing its product on as many platforms as possible. “It is logical and timely that Movielink would no offer an electronic sell-through service, truly taking them to the next level of digital distribution,” Tsujihara said. The other studios partnering with Movielink to provide downloads are MGM, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, and Universal.
