Helinet Wins SBA Award

Helinet Aviation Services received an award from the U.S. Small Business Administration for providing high definition cameras used to survey the destruction left behind from Hurricane Katrina. Helinet, based at the Van Nuys Airport, was among 14 small businesses from around the country recognized Thursday with a SBA 2006 American Spirit Award. “Through volunteerism and hard work, these individuals exemplified the American spirit by providing the goods, services, compassion and hope that businesses and homeowners needed to survive the destruction and emotional aftermath of these storms,” SBA Administrator Hector V. Barreto said. Helinet owner and founder Alan Purwin and a crew of 10 provided the earliest video footage of what remained in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in late August. The company provided the pool helicopter from which footage used by all the major television networks was shot. The winners were selected from nominations submitted by SBA field offices. The awards were given in Washington, D.C. as part of National Small Business Week.
