Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced his support for a seven-year phase out of Stage 2 jet aircraft at Van Nuys Airport. Joseph Aredas, a member of the Board of Airport Commissioners was to introduce a resolution on Monday that would set the ban in motion. The resolution was approved by the board in 1990, but later that year Congress passed the Airport Noise and Capacity Act to limit local jurisdictions’ control over airport operations. Villaraigosa said he is in favor of phasing out the jets as long as the effort is done in a manner that complies with Federal Aviation Administration regulations. Aredas’ resolution will ask Los Angeles World Airports staff to hasten the adoption of the regulations.
