NBC Workers Vote to Strike

Unionized workers at the NBC affiliate in Burbank have voted to authorize a strike after not having a new contract for over two months. KNBC is one of four NBC Universal-owned stations the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians Communication Workers of the World has taken the action against. “What this does is authorize the executive board to go ahead and call a strike, a strike date at any time in the future,” said union spokesman Jeff Miller. “It does not mandate a strike.” NBC Universal spokeswoman Liz Fischer said the union still owes the company a response on the last offer made on April 11. “The company remains optimistic the negotiations will be resolved amicably,” Fischer said. Some of the issues that need addressing are job security, reducing hours for night shift differential pay, eliminating retiree health care coverage for new hires, and other changes in staffing and work hours for union-represented workers, union President John Clark said in a prepared statement. The union’s current contract expired on March 31, Miller said. The other stations affected by the strike authorization are in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C.
