Countrywide Looking for Displaced Katrina Victims

Countrywide Financial Corporation, a mortgage lender based in Calabasas, has started a telephone and door-to-door campaign to look evacuees from Hurricane Katrina and put them in touch with their lender. The effort is a partnership with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). Many displaced homeowners have not been able to get in touch with their mortgage lender to discuss postponement of payments, the company said. The program will cover Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Countrywide and several mortgage lenders are offering suspended mortgage payments, adjusting repayment plans and credit reporting as assistance to customers with no homes and who are not able to work.
