VICA Supports LAUSD Breakup

The Valley Industry and Commerce Association came out on Friday in support of two pending bills before state lawmakers to break up the Los Angeles Unified School District. The district as now organized does not adequately serve the 727,000 students within its boundaries or the district’s educators, the organization said. While the district has made positive strides it is still too large to achieve superior results, association Vice Chairman Bob Scott said. “The Los Angeles business community needs to give educators the opportunity and tools to turn this thing around, to make good on giving children a solid start to their educational futures,” Scott said. “To do this, efficiency is the key, and achieving it will mean the creation of smaller and more manageable districts.” Assembly Bill 2071 and Senate Bill 1326 were introduced Feb. 16. Both bills would reorganize school districts with at least 500,000 students to smaller districts with a maximum of 50,000 and establishes a commission to aid in the process.
