Burbank Airport Gets Soundproofing Money

Congressman Brad Sherman has secured $10 million for the Bob Hope Airport for its ongoing program to soundproof nearby homes, his office announced Tuesday. The grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will allow the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, operator of the Burbank airfield, to insulate homes from jet aircraft noise. The money will cover about 200 homes, airport spokesman Victor Gill said. The money brings to $55.2 million to the amount of federal support for noise mitigation near the airport, Sherman said. “This is an investment that will improve the quality of life for residents who live near the airport,” Sherman added. Under earlier noise mitigation projects, Luther Burbank Middle School, Glenwood Elementary School, Burbank Adult School and St. Patrick’s School were insulated. The airport authority has added $13.3 million in matching funds and has committed another $1.9 million to pay for noise-abatement work not covered by federal grants.
