New CEO Takes Reins at Glendale Adventist Hospital

A healthcare administrator from the Pacific Northwest has been named top executive of Glendale Adventist Medical Center. Morre Dean, president and CEO of Walla Walla General Hospital in Walla Walla, Wash., will take over as president and CEO of the facility Jan. 1, replacing Scott Reiner, who was promoted to senior vice president of Roseville-based parent company Adventist Health. Dean said he took the position in Glendale because it presents unique challenges and a chance for him to build professionally. “Furthering our mission was an opportunity I wanted to be a part of,” he said, in a telephone interview from Washington. A native of Colorado, Dean has been at Walla Walla, a 72-bed Adventist hospital in the southeast corner of the state, for seven years. He is credited with spearheading that facility’s $4-million financial turnaround and construction of a $20-million retirement center. Dean has also served as vice president for Porter and Littleton Adventist hospitals in Denver and in management positions at Florida Hospital in Orlando. He said his stops at the modestly-sized hospitals have equipped him for the position at Glendale Adventist, the largest of the 20 Adventist-owned hospitals across the country. “The things you learn at smaller organizations prepare you for bigger ones,” he said. “It’s definitely a challenge.” Dean takes the helm of the 448-bed Glendale Adventist in the middle of a wide-ranging campus expansion plan that includes a new patient care tower and medical office building. The facility, which employs 2,190 including 705 doctors, is also facing continued demand for services. The average daily census for the hospital increased from 293.1 in 2004 to 300.9 in 2005 and occupancy jumped from 64.84 percent to 67.16 percent last year. Dean has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Union College in Lincoln, Neb., and master’s degree from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Dean said his wife and two children plan to move to Glendale within in the next few months. “Glendale has a feel to it that’s really nice,” he said.
