La Canada-based Pleasant Care Corp. has filed Chap. 11 bankruptcy amid charges of elder abuse at some of its 30 facilities. In March, the company was told to pay more than $1.3 million to settle a lawsuit brought by state officials who linked two deaths at Pleasant Care nursing homes to inadequate care. California health officials have fined the company more than 160 times for violations at its facilities since 2002. The bankruptcy allows Pleasant Care to continue operating as it reorganizes its debt, and state officials will continue to monitor patient care.
