Retail sales in January grew 4 percent over the January 2006, a weaker showing than last year, according to data just released by the tracking and consulting company Retail Forward Inc. The results were based upon reports from 60 retailers nationwide. Retail Forward considered the showing to be strong, and attributed the results to gift card sales over the holiday, a let-up in gas prices and favorable weather.
