300 State Hospitals Won’t Meet 2013 Deadline: Study

Half of the hospitals in California that vulnerable to collapse during a large earthquake will not receive seismic retrofitting before the state’s mandatory 2013 deadline, a study released by the California HealthCare Foundation has found. More than 300 hospitals in the state are prone to collapse and about half will fail to meet the deadline, the study found. It credited the delays to increased costs of the required but unfunded state mandates, which could cost upwards of $110 billion. State lawmakers after the 1994 Northridge earthquake required all medical facilities to meet certain earthquake standards. The next deadline is 2013, in which all hospitals must remain standing after a quake. A 2030 deadline requires hospitals stay completely functional after a quake.
