County Exec. Candidate Drops Out

The Board of Supervisors’ pick for L.A. County chief administrative officer has bowed out less than a day after he was nominated for the post. Thomas Mauk will remain the top executive of Orange County after that county’s board of supervisors offered him a better deal than L.A. County’s. Mauk accepted the position with Los Angeles County on Monday. “The support of the Orange County Board of Supervisors and staff of the county was key to my decision,” Mauk said in a statement. “The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors is first class and a remarkable board for oversight of the nation’s largest county.” He is the second candidate nominated for the position to step down; earlier this month, Sandra Vargas, an administrator from Minnesota, dropped out after the board offered her the job. The politically powerful position is to replace longtime CAO David Janssen, who stepped down earlier this month.
