DreamWorks Eyes Third Dimension

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. said today it intends to produce all of its films in 3D starting in 2009. The firm plans to begin creating its films using stereoscopic 3D rather than employing the technology in the post-production process. The first film to take advantage of the format is Monsters vs. Aliens, planned for release in the summer of 2009. “Historically, 3D has been used primarily as an add-on or a bonus feature,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO. “We’re going to use the latest stereoscopic 3D technology to build our movies from the ground up.” By 2009, DreamWorks said it expects there will be several thousand movie screens equipped for 3D.
