FDA OKs New St. Jude Heart Device

Medical device maker St. Jude Medical Inc. received Food and Drug Administration approval for a heart failure device that for the first time suppresses atrial fibrillation. The condition, in which heart chambers beat out of sync, occurs in about 40 percent of patients with heart failure. The technology is the first of its type in the country. St. Jude is based in Minnesota, but its pacemakers and defibrillators are made in Sylmar.
