Former Bermite Site Owners to Pay $100 Million for Clean Up

The owners of the contaminated Bermite plant site in Santa Clarita have agreed to pay $100 million to clean up the property as part of a settlement deal struck Wednesday. The current and former owners of the 996-acre Whittaker-Bermite facility Whittaker Corp., Remediation Financial Inc. and Arizona-based Santa Clarita LLC will pay for the cleanup of the site at 22116 W. Soledad Canyon Road, which manufactured explosives, rocket fuel and munitions from the 1940s to the 1990s. The Castaic Lake Water Agency, Newhall County Water District, Santa Clarita Water Co. and Valencia Water Co. sued the companies after perchlorate from the site was discovered in several Santa Clarita Valley wells. The settlement provides funding to build replacement wells, pipelines and a treatment plant to remove the perchlorate.
