Boeing Site Donated to State for Open Space

A former rocket testing site in the Santa Monica Mountains has been donated to the state for undeveloped open space. The 2,400-acre Santa Susana Field Laboratory was given over to the state in a deal with Boeing Co. Boeing will continue clean up efforts of the property used to test rocket engines used in the U.S. space program. Work at the site also included research, development and testing for nuclear, solar and other alternative energy sources. “Teaming with a respected land steward will ensure that the environmental cleanup and ultimate transfer of the property is completed in an appropriate and timely manner such that it is safe for use by the public,” said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. Boeing will assume full responsibility for costs related to the environmental remediation and future claims related to environmental issues at the site.
