Amgen to Cut 675 Positions in Thousand Oaks

Biotech giant Amgen will lay off 8 percent, or 675 workers, at its Thousand Oaks headquarters. About 8,200 people in total work at company headquarters. Amgen Rhode Island will suffer the brunt of the company’s restructuring plan, with nearly 30 percent, or 450, of the estimated 1,600 workers at the West Greenwich, R.I., manufacturing facility facing cuts. The layoffs stem from the company’s announcement last month that it would restructure following the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ July decision that doctors would only be reimbursed for prescribing Amgen’s anemia drugs Aranesp and Epogen in certain ways. Due to 700 employees taking a voluntary buyout, a hiring freeze and attrition about 1,500 workers will have been cut by early November rather than the 2,600 originally announced.
