Nestl & #233; Pulls Candy Prank

An April Fool’s Day prank from Nestle USA had the company announcing it was changing the name of its popular Butterfinger candy bar to simply The Finger. The company used the stunt to promote its new Butterfinger Comedy Network debuting on Yahoo! Video. Glendale-based Nestle did however make available on the afternoon of April 1 nearly 200,000 free Butterfinger bars in special The Finger wrappers at 7-Eleven stores in 10 cities, including Los Angeles. Taking advantage of the annual day for pranks and jokes, Nestle announced the name change after conducting a two-year study about consumer perceptions that revealed most consumers associated the name with negative characteristics, such as being clumsy or awkward. “This is a momentous day for The Finger candy bar,” said Nestl & #233; Confections Spokesman Robert Hall. “Changing the name of an iconic American candy bar is a decision we did not take lightly. Later in the day, a second release from Nestle stated the name change was not taking place and was done to draw publicity for the Butterfinger Comedy Network.
