Van Nuys Target of License, Sales Tax Check

Businesses in Van Nuys will be among those visited by state inspectors in a crackdown on non-compliance with licenses and paying sales tax. The Board of Equalization sent out letters to nearly 8,000 businesses in the targeted areas alerting them to the campaign to begin in mid-September, the Daily News reported. Businesses that fail to collect sales taxes are undercutting law-abiding businesses by essentially selling products at a lower price or increasing profits by pocketing the revenue themselves, The Daily News said. Canvassers will check that a store has a local business license and a seller’s permit, the paper reported. Along with Van Nuys, other areas to be targeted are Emeryville, Sacramento, San Jose, Torrance, Santa Ana and Perris.
