Regional Partner ‘Rotation’ at Moss Adams

By THOM SENZEE Contributing Reporter Moss Adams LLP recently underwent a partner “rotation” at its Los Angeles location, which has a satellite office in Woodland Hills. The end result is one that left the regional offices with a new partner; a former managing partner stepping back to become a rank-and-file partner; and a freshly promoted managing partner taking the reins. “Well…, we are a partnership, not a hierarchy,” said Amy Esary, marketing manager for media relations at the firm’s corporate headquarters in Bellingham, Wash. Furthermore, Esary said, the role of managing partner is one that is not expected to be held indefinitely. “A lot of times the managing partner role is a rotating position,” she said. “They can get pretty burned out by all of the administrative responsibilities of the job.” Such was the case for Rob Greenspan, according to Esary. “He has been responsible for the continued growth of our Southern California operations, which as you know has been impressive,” she said. But, according to Esary, what made Greenspan so successful in the job is what made him want to turn the position over to new managing partner Todd Van der Wel. “I think he really missed working with clients day-to-day,” Esary said. Van der Wel agrees with Esary adding “he’s not a traditional line partner what he’s seen and done will be utilized as we move forward,” said Van der Wel. Van der Wel is strongly versed in technology, life-sciences and Securities and Exchange Commission issues, according to Esary. In fact, he worked as an intern for the SEC before practicing accounting, she said. His familiarity with the technology industry, as well as life sciences, matches the firm’s top leadership with business sectors expected to grow faster than most others especially in northern Los Angeles County. Van der Wel’s vision includes making Moss Adams a household name in Sourthern California. “I grew up in the northwest where Moss Adams has that kind of visibility,” he said. Moss Adams’ new partner is Bill Sturges, who has been in accounting for five years, has an MBA from U.C. Davis, as well as a master’s in taxation from Golden Gate University, where he is also an adjunct professor.
