Area Unemployment Ticks Up Again

The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale region saw unemployment tick up another 0.7 percent in May, reaching 6.4 percent with 36,000 out of work, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. That is about a 2 percent increase over the same period last year, giving L.A. the dubious distinction of having the second-highest year-over-year unemployment increase in the nation, just behind Detroit. But that’s looking at the entire civilian labor force. Non-farm payrolls saw a decrease of 0.2 percent or just less than 7,000 workers over the year with the April to May loss of just 3,000 workers out compared with the total of 4.1 million who remain employed.
