Prescription drug history to go online, AG says

California Attorney General Jerry Brown will announce a plan to give doctors and pharmacies real-time Internet access to patients’ prescription drug history, an effort to prevent drug addicts from collecting multiple narcotics prescriptions from many different doctors. “Every year, thousands of doctors try to check their patients’ prescription drug use history but the state’s database is difficult to access,” Brown said in a statement. “If California puts this information online, with real-time access, it will give doctors and pharmacies the technology they need to fight prescription drug abuse which is burdening our healthcare system.” California’s prescription drug database, known as the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System, currently contains 86 million records of every schedule II, III and IV prescription drug dispensed in California.
