Hospital urged to beef up its business board

LANCASTER – Antelope Valley Healthcare District officials are pondering a consultant’s recommendation to create a board subcommittee that would increase the number of people overseeing Antelope Valley Hospital’s business operations. Recommended by a consultant hired under agreements connected with the district’s sale of approximately $70 million worth of tax-free bonds in the 1990s, the subcommittee would consist of the five members of the elected board of directors plus at least six community members appointed by the elected board. Subcommittee members would vote on matters pertaining to hospital business but not the acquisition or sale of district property or equipment, said Edward Mirzabegian, the hospital district’s chief executive officer.
