Actors Edging Closer to Strike?

The Screen Actors Guild will ask its membership for a strike authorization after a round of mediated negotiations with the Hollywood studios failed to break the deadlock over a new contract. The union would need at least three weeks to conduct the strike authorization vote and will embark on an education program to get the required 75 percent approval, Daily Variety reported. A work stoppage could effect awards season much as the Writers Guild of America strike forced the cancellation of the Golden Globes and was settled just weeks before the Academy Awards. SAG and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have been at odds over language in a new contract on compensation for use of television series and films distributed through downloads, online streaming and onto mobile devices. The union has been working without a new contract since June.
