Passenger Numbers Decline at Bob Hope Airport

Turmoil in the airline industry resulted in a 15 percent drop in passengers at the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank for August when compared with the previous year. Total revenue passengers numbered 485,413 using the nine commercial airliners serving the airfield. Passengers totaled 572,117 in August 2007. For the period of January through August, 3.7 million passengers came through the airport. That is a 6 percent drop from the 4 million for the same period in 2007. The U.S. airline industry was especially hard hit during the summer months as the high price of fuel forced carriers to raise ticket prices and make cuts in their routes and schedules. Of the eight major airlines serving Bob Hope all saw a drop in passengers in August save for two JetBlue, which has daily non-stops between Burbank and New York City, and SkyWest, which operates Delta Connection flights to Salt Lake City. Southwest Airlines, which serves the highest number of passengers at the airport, had a 15 percent drop in passengers from August 2007 to 2008.
