Television Filming Remains Strong

On-location television production remained high in the third quarter when compared with the same period from a year ago. One-hour dramas and reality series were the categories with the highest gains from July through September, according to FilmLA, the not for profit agency that coordinates on-location filming permits. Overall television production went up 17 percent to 6,959 days from 5,950 days in the third quarter of 2007. On-location filming for dramas was up by 23 percent and by 14 percent for reality series. Reality programming is not typically impacted by labor uncertainty and is the primary driver of television production in the region, said Todd Lindgren, vice president of communications for FilmLA. On-location filming for feature films was down by 38 percent for the quarter, a drop the agency attributes to the stalemate between the major Hollywood studios and the Screen Actors Guild over a new contract. Permitted days of on-location commercial production dropped 24 percent compared to the same quarter last year. The figures from FilmLA do not included production on studio soundstages.
