Palmdale Dropped From Regional Airports Plan

Los Angeles World Airports will no longer make the Palmdale airport part of its regionalization plans, the agency has said. The Antelope Valley airfield located on a former Air Force base is not viable enough to pull in commercial air service to help reduce flights at Los Angeles International Airport, a LAWA official told the Daily Breeze. “If viability is shown at Palmdale, we would welcome air service back there,” Mike Molina, senior director of government affairs for LAWA was quoted in the Daily Breeze. “But the last 18 months has shown us that air service at Palmdale is not viable at this time.” In September, United Airlines announced it would cut its daily Palmdale to San Francisco flights at year’s end as the airline eliminates its least profitable routes. Los Angeles County officials are now considering filing a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles and LAWA for allegedly violating the terms of a settlement reached three years ago over a failed $11 billion airport expansion plan, the Daily Breeze reported. Part of the deal required Los Angeles to financially support efforts to reduce air traffic at LAX, while also bulking up operations at its sister airports in Ontario and Palmdale, the Daily Breeze reported.
