Fade to Black for SAG Negotiator?

A coalition of members of the Screen Actors Guild seeks to oust the union’s chief negotiator over handling of contract talks with the major Hollywood studios. A resolution was filed Jan. 12 to fire Doug Allen, the guild’s executive director and chief negotiator. The move is another sign of inner turmoil and strife within the union that has been without a contract since June, the Los Angeles Times reported. The resolution was introduced by moderate board members unhappy that Allen has mishandled contract talks with the Sherman Oaks-based Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and weakened SAG’s clout at the bargaining table, the Times reported. Counter-moves by other board members backing Allen may prevent a vote on the matter before the board meeting ends on Jan. 13, the Times reported. The union and the studios have been at odds over contract language on compensation for work distributed through online streaming, downloads and distribution to mobile devices.
