Location Filming Down Across the Board

On-location television filming posted the least amount of reduction in the first six months when compared to a year ago, according to statistics released by FilmL.A. The decline in television production by 4.2 percent was miniscule compared to that in feature films, which has been seeing steady declines in ten of the last 12 years that FilmL.A. has been coordinating the on-location permitting process. For the first six months, feature film production dropped by 52.5 percent to 2,314 permitted days. For the same period in 2008, feature film production accounted for 4,868 permitted days. Permitted production days for commercials dropped by 31 percent to 2,459 for the first six month of 2009. FilmL.A. is a not for profit agency that coordinates on-location film, television and commercial production in the city and county of Los Angeles, the cities of Palmdale and Lancaster, and certain non-municipal clients including the Burbank school district. The agency’s production numbers do not include filming on studio soundstages. Television production numbers have been all over the map due to the Writers Guild of America strike that settled in early 2008, said FilmL.A. President Paul Adley. “But, we are deeply concerned by our long-term loss of commercial and feature film production,” Adley said. “The advertising sector has been hard hit by the economy, and feature films are consistently shot in incentive-generous locales outside California.” Mark R.
