EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Assisted Living Facilities List is made up of senior care companies ranked by the number of assisted living units on each campus. Assisted living services are defined as residential communities that offer supervision and aid in daily activities. Some of these facilities also include skilled nursing units, which provide 24-hour inpatient care, as well as independent living units, where supervision and medical care are not required. While the state of California licenses skilled nursing facilities by beds, assisted living facilities are licensed by the maximum number of residents they can serve. Independent living facilities generally do not require licensing, but they can be licensed in the case of continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs), which focus on long-term contracts that cover various stages of the resident’s needs. Depending on the company, miscellaneous health care is available or coordinated with an outside provider. While most centers offer care to the general public, companies and organizations such as Los Angeles Jewish Home and Ararat Assisted Living specialize in care for specific demographics. — By Research Department THE PACESETTER This year’s top ranked assisted living facility is nonprofit Los Angeles Jewish Home with 271 assisted living units. The facility, which also ranked first place on the List last year, managed to maintain its first-place position even after dramatically reducing its number of assisted living units. The organization had 423 of these units in 2010. Los Angeles Jewish Home, which was founded in 1912, has three campuses: Grancell Village, Eisenberg Village and Fountainview. These campuses are located on two properties in Reseda. Los Angeles Jewish Home, which also offers skilled nursing and independent living units, calls itself the largest multi-level senior living facility in the Western United States.
