European missile maker buys Northrop division

Missile maker MBDA Inc., which has a Westlake Village headquarters, has purchased Northrop Grumman’s Viper Strike munitions business, the company announced this week. MBDA Inc., an Arlington, Va.-based wholly owned subsidiary of its European parent company, purchased the Huntsville, Ala.-based company for an undisclosed amount. The purchase is MBDA’s first acquisition in the United States, and the company sees the deal as a way to increase its U.S. presence and its capacity to build weapons for unmanned aerial systems. “The Viper Strike line is a perfect addition to our portfolio and allows us entrée into the fast growing armed (unmanned aerial systems) business segment,” MBDA CEO Jerry Agee said in a statement. With the deal, MBDA now owns two development and manufacturing bases, including its Westlake Village location.
