Restaurant Gives Pizzas to Little Leaguers

This is a regular feature on philanthropic activities by Valley-area businesspeople and companies. Rosti Tuscan Kitchen is offering free pizzas to Encino Little League players who hit home runs. The restaurant has donated 100 pizza vouchers to the league. This is the third year in a row that the Encino restaurant is serving as the league’s home run sponsor, said Kevin Goldfein, owner of Rosti Tuscan Kitchen. “We are eager to contribute to our community to help make it stronger,” Goldfein said. “Being a neighborhood family restaurant, it is so important to us to give back.” Goldfein said his other Rosti Tuscan Kitchen restaurant in Santa Monica is also providing home run vouchers to a little league in its area. Store Rewards Reading Franklin’s Hardware is rewarding local students for reading books. The Woodland Hills-based company is sponsoring its first “Shine a Light on Reading” program, a book light gift program for local schools in its area. The business is implementing Shine a Light on Reading at two schools this year. At Woodland Hills Elementary School, each child kindergarten through fifth grade will receive a book light for completing the school’s monthly reading requirements. At Topanga Elementary School, the prizes will be given to kindergarten students who complete their monthly reading requirements, as well as to high-achieving students who participate in programs with the librarian throughout the year. “Reading plays such a fundamental role in the education of our children and we need to continue to inspire them regardless of what is happening within our schools,” said Chip Kurzeka, owner of Franklin’s Hardware. Actor Donates Backpacks Child actor Rico Rodriguez will help prepare other children for school at an event celebrating his first television commercial. Rodriguez, who plays “Manny” in the television show “Modern Family,” plans to give away 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley on July 19 at the Burbank Staples store. The store is located at 2080 Empire Ave. The donation will be given during Staples’s back-to-school advertising and marketing campaign launch event, where Rodriguez will also debut his commercial. The commercial begins airing nationally on July 24. The launch event will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Institute Teams with Celebrity The Will Rogers Institute named Sarah Jessica Parker as its 2011 Summer Theatrical public service announcement spokesperson to help raise money for medical research, education and supplies. The Burbank-based nonprofit organization is running a fundraiser campaign in movie theaters across the country. Throughout the summer, the theaters’ patrons donate to the institute by giving spare change, making special purchases or making one-time donations by texting WRI to 85944. The organization then donates the collected money to pulmonary research laboratories, medical school fellowships, neonatal ventilators for children’s hospitals and free educational materials. The summer campaign runs through Labor Day weekend. -Compiled by Jessica Vernabe
