Network Names New President

A former executive with ABC Studios has been named as the new president of The CW, the network co-owned by Warner Bros. Entertainment and CBS. Mark Pedowitz will replace Dawn Ostroff who has headed up the network since its founding in January 2006 following the merger of UPN and The WB. Pedowitz brings a strong background in program development, production and business affairs. He was president of ABC Studios and most recently headed up Pine Street Entertainment, on the Warner Bros. Studios Burbank lot. “The network has built a strong foundation and powerful identity in its first five years, and I’m looking forward to helping elevate it to even greater success in the future,” Pedowitz said. After a slow start, The CW found its niche in programming appealing to young women ages18 to 34 such “Gossip Girl” and “America’s Next Top Model.” The network also caught on early to the wave of supernatural shows with “The Vampire Diaries.” At ABC Studios, Pedowitz oversaw such hit series as “Lost,” “Desperate Housewives,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” At Pine Street, Pedowitz was an executive producer on the pilot “Meet Jane” in association with Warner Horizon Television. Pedowitz brings to the network a combination of business savvy and strong relationships with the creative community, sad Warner Bros. Television Group Bruce Rosenblum. “He’s the perfect executive to help us take the network to the next level: a key content driver with vast experience in all disciplines,” Rosenblum said. In another appointment at The CW, Thom Sherman, a colleague of Pedowitz at ABC, has been named as executive vice president of development. Sherman will oversee the creative efforts of the network. He previously worked for Bad Robot Productions, headed up by J.J. Abrams, where he helped develop and launch “Lost.” —Mark R. Madler
