The International Myeloma Foundation announced it will host a Congressional Briefing Oct. 25 to discuss the need for continuous biomedical research in the treatment of myeloma, a cancer that affects cells in the bone marrow. The North Hollywood-based nonprofit organization specializes in the support and treatment of patients suffering from myeloma through research, support and advocacy. The briefing, which will include speakers Congresswoman Jackie Speier and Doctor C. Ola Landgren of the National Cancer Institute, will focus on the achievements and advancements made possible through continuous research. Susie Novis, president and co-founder of the IMF said although patients of myeloma need more treatment options and the “underlying causes for the spread of the disease” still need to be found, progress is being made. “The investment in research is paying off,” Novis said. “Each year the news is positive, the progress is encouraging, and many patients are living longer, better lives. Now our challenge is to continue that trend and to find that elusive cure.” Angela Melero
