Spirit Successfully Tests Flight Software

The B-2 Spirit stealth bomber completed an 18 ½-hour flight over the North Pole to test new flight management software that will now enter low-rate initial production. The Spirit is based out of the Palmdale facility of Northrop Grumman and is under contract to the U.S. Air Force. The mission included air-refueling to and from the North Pole from Edwards Air Force Base. The software verification reviews and flight test completed a two-year project between Northrop, the Air Force and multiple suppliers to verify hardware, software and process requirements. “By bringing forward lessons learned, best practices and core leadership, and merging this with innovative and detailed planning, the team was able to effectively manage cost and schedule to meet our contract commitments,” said Josh Foster, Northrop Grumman’s project team leader.
