Helinet Buys Aerial Camera Company

Helinet Aviation Services has acquired a New Zealand company that makes camera systems to shoot aerial footage in the ultra-high definition format. Helinet was joined by individual investors in the acquisition, including entertainment industry professionals and a private equity manager. Financial terms between Van Nuys-based Helinet and Shotover Camera Systems were not disclosed. The Shotover camera system is the new standard for aerial cinematography and is easier to rig and shop than older systems, said Helinet President Alan Purwin. “The response from aviation firms serving the motion picture market has been extremely strong and we have already closed several sales to operators around the world,” Purwin said in a prepared statement. Helinet provides helicopters for charter operations, and aerial photography for broadcast stations and feature films. It also provides medical transport. The company had once owned Cineflex LLC, developer of one of the first high-definition aerial camera systems until selling the division in 2007. Shotover company founder John Coyle will remain as a general manager under Helinet’s ownership. Shotover will continue to maintain its engineering and research facilities in Queenstown, New Zealand.
