Production Starts on Lightweight Aircraft Windows

PPG Aerospace has started full-scale production of a lightweight plastic material used for windows on a Gulfstream business jet. The Sylmar-based company developed the Opticor material to help aircraft manufacturers and operators meet efficiency and maintenance challenges. “Aircraft windows made with Opticor advanced transparency material are lightweight and resist crazing to maintain optical clarity,” said Anthony Stone, PPG global director for new business development and innovations for transparencies, in a prepared statement. Opticor, fabricated in a facility in Alabama, is used for the outboard surface of the passenger-cabin windows in the Gulfstream G650 business jet, Stone said. The transparencies division of PPG Aerospace is the world’s largest supplier of aircraft windshields, windows and canopies. Mark R. Madler
