Health Net Inc. Introduces New Affordable Network

Health Net of California Inc., a subsidiary of Woodland Hills-based Health Net Inc., introduced a new managed care plan in Southern California with closely aligned provider partners and incentives for consumers to stay healthy. The new plan, SmartCare, will also cover complementary medical services such as chiropractic care, the company said. Health Net is partnering with a number of medical providers in the Los Angeles region and the San Fernando Valley to deliver care under the new plan, and will be forming accountable care organizations with these providers as part of its program. Among its partners will be HealthCare Partners Medical Group, a large group practice based in Torrance. “We’re taking one of our pioneering tailored networks, the Bronze HMO, and expanding benefits and adding incentives for healthy habits,” Steve Sell, president of Health Net’s Western Region Health Plan, said in a prepared statement. “Even with these additions, SmartCare premiums in many cases still will be up to 25 percent less than a comparable level of benefits available through our full statewide HMO network.” Sell said the SmartCare network utilizes health care provider groups that share Health Net’s focus on quality medical care at an affordable price. “They share our vision of creating strategic provider partnerships that, in many cases, will result in effective Accountable Care Organizations delivering care that is personal, simple and local,” Sell said. “SmartCare helps us strategically adapt to the changing health care landscape,” Dr. Robert Margolis, chairman and CEO of HealthCare Partners said in a prepared statement. “Our collaboration with SmartCare establishes an Accountable Care Organization that aligns us with Health Net in a way that helps promote affordable benefits and enhanced health outcomes.” The SmartCare network became available March 1, 2012, to companies with employees in Los Angeles, San Diego and San Bernardino counties.
