MICHAEL KEHOE

In the years Michael Kehoe has worked in Hollywood he has been an actor, production assistant, director, and craft services coordinator. Add activist to that list, too, as Kehoe has emerged in the past few years as a vocal supporter of the state’s film tax incentive program. In 2011, Kehoe was part of a volunteer crew that made a public service announcement shot in Studio City on the importance of film and television production to the Southern California economy. How did you become involved with the film business? Early on, when I first moved out here, I wanted to make films. I was Sylvester Stallone’s assistant on “Rocky IV” for a short time. I made a short film that went to Sundance, and so I continued making independent films. As that was going on, I ended up not having money. My brother got into the craft services business. I got into that and ended up working with Tom Cruise on “Jerry Maguire” and did just about everything (by Cruise) up to “Mission Impossible 4.” I was a first assistant director and an actor in 14 films. How important is it to have an experienced crew when making a movie? It is very important. It saves you time and it saves you money. Every time you have someone who is not skilled you have to bring in someone to help. Someone who is skilled is the equivalent of two or three who are not. What’s the toughest part of your job? The rough part now is getting a job in California. I do not blame the studios for going out of state. I blame the politicians who do not understand the industry. They see a movie like “The Avengers” making $1 billion and they ask, ‘Why should they get (tax incentive) money?’ What’s the most satisfying part of your job? Working on a picture where everyone comes together and when you are screening a successful picture. I have worked on over 80 movies and 75 percent have been successful. I feel proud to be a part of those films. Do you get star struck? I think I did early on. When I worked with Sylvester Stallone I was with him every day. He was a regular guy. I am amazed at the type of individual he was. The same with Tom Cruise. He is down to earth and he looks you in the eye. I was star struck with (director) Walter Hill and it was amazing to watch him work. My admiration comes from the people who have these incredible jobs and put these amazing visuals on screen.
