Sizing Up Children’s Growth

Inching Up: Device. Parents have long scratched their heads over a dilemma: whether to immortalize a growth spurt – by marking up a perfectly good door frame with a child’s height. Zohar and Miri Haykeen, two Tarzana parents, wrestled with that same question a couple of years ago when their son was growing up – and decided to make a business out of it. The company, called KidMeasure Inc., makes a product of the same name that is almost identical to the slide-rule measuring system found at doctors’ offices. The device measures height from about 25 inches to 6 feet, adheres to a wall and includes paper and a stamping system. That allows parents to mark the date of a new measurement, without compromising any aesthetics. “I came up with this idea that I can measure accurately and also record it. That way you actually see what happened in the last year, the last two years,” said Zohar Haykeen, 51, the company’s president and a certified public accountant who still works full time. “You can also keep it as a keepsake.” The couple financed the device, which is manufactured in Taiwan, with sweat equity and savings. It sells for $24.95 at kidmeasure.com and Amazon.com, and will be available during the holiday season at 12 buybuy Baby stores nationwide. “It’s a young product but there’s a lot of interest,” he said. – Bailey Brewer
