Disney Announces Paper Sourcing Policy

The Walt Disney Co. has started a two-phase program establishing guidelines for paper used in daily business operations and its consumer products and packaging. With the Paper Sourcing and Use Policy the Burbank-based entertainment and media conglomerate aims to minimize paper consumption; eliminate paper products containing irresponsible harvested fiber; and mmaximize recycled content and fiber sourced from Forest Stewardship Council-certified forestry operations The first phase of the plan focuses on paper sourced directly by or for Disney for its branded products and packaging while second phase focuses on paper sources by independent licensees. Disney formulated the policy after taking input from stakeholders throughout its supply chain and from the environmental community, including the Rainforest Action Network. The network commended Disney for joining other companies in demonstrating there is no need to endanger forests and animals for paper products, said Executive Director Rebecca Tarbotton. “This policy will have a particularly important impact in Indonesia, the primary place where rainforests are still being cut down for pulp and paper,” Tarbotton said in a prepared statement.
