40 Under 40, Born

Ryan Born, 33 CEO/Founder, AudioMicro Inc. With a dual interest in art and finance, Ryan Born is monetizing art on the Internet. Born’s photography has been published in Forbes, Rolling Stone and People magazines. He also was the vice president of finance and controller for WireImage and oversaw the photo distribution startup’s $208 million acquisition by Getty Images. In 2007, he founded Sherman Oaks-based AudioMicro Inc., which provides stock music and sound effects, as well as celebrity photos, through its ImageCollect brand and YouTube monetization as AdRev. “Time is your most valuable factor, so deciding what opportunities not to pursue is crucial to success,” he said. Born, 32, earned his bachelor’s degree from Emory University with a double emphasis on accounting/marketing and art history. He received his master’s in accounting science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He says working at a startup can offer an education that one can’t find in the classroom. “Join a startup and pay your dues 3+ years,” Born said. “If you’re thinking of paying for an M.B.A., consider working at a startup instead to gain valuable experience.”
