Pot Firm Lights Up Hollywood

Call it inevitable. GrowLife Inc., a Woodland Hills company that makes lighting and other equipment to grow pot, is now moving into the Hollywood spotlight as more states legalize marijuana use. The company, once uncomfortable about acknowledging its gardening products are primarily aimed at pot growers, is providing consulting services to “Legit,” a new cable comedy about a stoner. Jim Jeffries stars as a foul-mouthed, stand-up comedian from Australia who’s struggling to make it in L.A. So what exactly do “consulting services” mean in this case? “We made sure that everything looked as it was supposed to in a Venice Beach stoner pad,” said Kyle Tracey, president and co-founder of Grow Life. You might want to put that one in the takes-one-to-know-one file, but it gets better. GrowLife also has affiliated companies such as Myrtle Beach, S.C. water pipe manufacturer Hitman Glass – pun apparently intended – and Dragon Chewer, a Los Angeles-based manufacturer of marijuana grinders. They got some very modern product placement in the show. “We added in quite a bit of product apparel and paraphernalia, like bongs and T-shirts,” Tracey said. So much for Coca-Cola. Tracey said GrowLife got the job after being contacted by Legit’s producer, who requested props that would help scenes like those set in the character’s bachelor pad. GrowLife has a track record in Hollywood, including consulting on the 2011 Sony Picture Classics documentary about a rap group, “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest,” and the film “Kid Cannabis,” which is still in production and features Ron Perlman. “Legit” airs on Thursdays at the very adult time of 10:30 p.m. on FX. – Lucy Guanuna
