The owner of a San Fernando Valley medical clinic has been sentenced to 42 months in prison for a scam that bilked Medicare out of more than $3 million.
Pezhman Ebrahimzadeh, better known as Dr. Pez Abrahams, was sentenced to billing the federal program for a variety of medical procedures that he never performed at his Winnetka Medical Group from 2008 until last year.
Ebrahimzadeh, 50, of Calabasas, obtained patients’ Medicare information by offering legitimate services and then used that information to also submit bogus bills. Prosecutors said he typically claimed to have performed expensive procedures, including treatment of bone tumors, for which the clinic lacked proper equipment.
Ebrahimzadeh’s “conduct was so brazen that he billed Medicare for purportedly performing dozens of procedures on patients who were dead,” prosecutors wrote in a memo to the court. “In addition to defrauding Medicare, defendant billed private insurance carriers for similar procedures, some of which he claimed he performed on himself.”
Ebrahimzadeh pleaded guilty in January to one count of health care fraud. The court ordered him to pay restitution of $3.18 million, mostly to the Medicare program, in addition to serving the prison time. The case was investigated by multiple law enforcement agencies.
He was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge George Wu on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
