Wal-Mart Opens Second Simi Valley Store

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. opened a 75,000-square-foot location in Simi Valley Wednesday, the retail company’s second location in town. The new store in the Sycamore Square Shopping center on Cochran Street fills a vacancy left after the closure of a Mervyn’s store three years ago. The store will employ 175 workers and carry groceries. “We are thrilled to open a Wal-Mart store in the heart of Simi Valley,” said store Manager Ebony Storey, in a statement. Despite highly publicized challenges to several proposed Wal-Marts in the Los Angeles area in recent months, including in Chinatown and Burbank, the Simi Valley store was embraced by city officials and met with little resident opposition. The Bentonville, Ark. company already has a location at 255 Cochran St., and city officials have said that the retailer is eyeing a third location in the Santa Susana Plaza for a smaller Neighborhood Market grocery store.
