Briefs: Exelis, Bank of Santa Clarita, United Online

Exelis Inc. has received a $9 million contract to supply ground-control radar to the Saudi Arabian National Guard. The work will be done in Van Nuys by the radar, reconnaissance and undersea systems business of Exelis, based in McLean, Va. The installation of the GCA-2020 radar will provide landing guidance and manage air traffic control operations. Dave Prater, vice president and general manager of the radar, reconnaissance and undersea systems business, said the contract deepens the ties between Exelis and Saudi Arabia and the wider region. “Exelis is committed to supporting our international customers’ evolving missions with these types of critical capabilities,” Prater said in a prepared statement. The Bank of Santa Clarita reported relatively flat second-quarter earnings on Monday even as deposits and assets grew strongly. The Santa Clarita financial institution reported net income of $308,000 in the quarter ended June 30, compared with $303,000 in the same period a year earlier. The bank said total loans rose 10 percent to $168 million, deposits rose 8 percent to $183 million and total assets rose 17 percent to $274 million from a year ago. Chairman and Chief Executive Frank Di Tomaso said the quarter represented the second-highest earnings ever recorded by the bank. “Our performance continues to reflect the benefits of our strategic planning and a strong commitment to achieving meaningful growth and returns for our shareholders,” he said in a statement. No shares traded, remaining at $9.16 on the OTC Bulletin Board. United Online Inc. announced on Monday it appointed Andrew Miller to its board of directors. Miller, 53, is chief financial officer of Cepheid Inc., a Sunnyvale company that develops molecular diagnostic tests. Miller is the eighth member of the company’s board and first appointee since the company spun off its FTD Cos. flower delivery service late last year. “Andrew brings extensive, senior-level finance experience with a variety of innovative technology companies. That experience will be vital in the coming months as United Online implements new strategies to achieve long-term growth,” said Chief Executive Francis Lobo in a statement. Prior to Cepheid, Miller was chief accounting officer for Autodesk, an enterprise software company, and held senior level finance positions at other firms, including MarketFirst Software Inc. and Silicon Graphics Inc.
